Color Washing

Color washing techniques lend themselves to a rustic country look, but are versatile enough in virtually any setting when using appropriate colors. The effect works best with earthy colors, such as Venetian red, raw sienna and other natural, soft colors.

For this technique to work well, the finish must be built up in layers. This helps to create a finish with depth and warmth. Most typical color wash finishes have 2 or 3 layers of color. In our two examples, we have chosen a 2 color and a 3 color effect.

This painted effect can be created using either oil or water based paint, but it is easier and quicker to used latex based paints. Although this painted effect can be painted on a smooth wall, you can also skim coat the surface with plaster, then apply the chosen paint as demonstrated in the example below.  (See the Venetian plaster page for details on applying the skim coat.)

To prepare the surface, follow the same methods as outlined in the surface preparation pages. Then, with your surface ready to accept the paint, begin by covering the entire surface with your base color and allow to dry completely (overnight).

3 Color, Color Washing: Pale Blue Base Coat - Mid-Blue Glaze - Dark Blue Glaze

With the base color dry, begin to apply your final coat in all directions with a standard paint brush, allowing the base color to come through your random brush strokes

If desired, once the final layer is completely dry, you can apply a coat of matte clear water based varnish for additional protection.

2 Color, Color Washing: Pale Grey Base Coat - Lilac Glaze

Follow the same procedures as with the above color washing finish. Be creative with the base coat. Remember that you can manipulate how much color you want to come through the 2nd or even 3rd color layer.

The final finish can be quite striking when completed properly.  Again, you can choose to top coat it with a latex based varnish for additional protection. This can be an excellent, protected finish for high humidity areas, such as bathrooms.

To summarize:

With three or more color washing effects, simply follow the directions above, adding the additional colors as you go. Remember to plan how you want the colors to come through, as this is the key to color washing techniques. Each successive layer should come through the previous layer, with each layer adding depth to the finish. Do not completely cover one layer after another, and be sure to use only a brush for all layers, with the exception of the base coat. This is an easy finish to apply and takes little painting knowledge to achieve.

Tip:  Try a section of the surface you want to cover with a sample of all the layers, exactly as you would apply them over the entire wall. This provides you the opportunity to make changes to your colors before committing to the entire room or wall.
