Getting ready: Work Area A well organized work area is essential. Always keep the work area clean, well ventilated and as dust free as possible. Always clean and organize the work area at the end of the day, and ensure that the area is organized each morning before starting any project. Good, natural light is ideal in any work environment. Keep all supplies and utensils organized so that they are ready for you when you need them. Any flammable materials should be stored in a well ventilated, cool area. A fire extinguisher should be readily accessible. Table space is critical for paint and glaze mixing. Job Setup The actual project area is usually different than the work shop area. Keeping the project site tidy, organized and clean is essential. Always plan out the tools and materials required for the job itself and ensure that these are well packed, organized and labeled. If your job is in an area where other contractors are at work, always assess what other work is being carried out in your area. Prepare the job site by covering all floors and furniture with drop cloths. Many painters like to have some type of table surface in their job area for easier paint and glaze mixing. It is helpful to develop a habit of how you like a job site set up, so that you are completely familiar and comfortable in any work environment. Create Checklists Checklists are very useful when preparing a job and during a job. This will help prevent forgetting tools or materials and will help ensure that you have sufficient quantities of all required materials. Document Document your work. This serves two purposes. The first is that anything that is written down is remembered better. The second is that you always have notes to refer back to. You can keep records of various paint and glaze recipes that did or did not work, as well as documenting every project you complete. Having good records can also prove invaluable if you ever return to the same job for touchups or more work. Label All Items Label everything. This includes all paints and glazes. Develop a system of labeling that works for you and stick to it. Use permanent markers for all labels and label all sides for easy identification. It is very helpful to label lids as well. This avoids any mix ups. Including dates on labels can help ensure that you're always using good products. Practice Practice, practice, practice! This is the key to learning and developing decorative painting skills. As well, more practice will enable you to complete jobs faster.
